‘Comrades in Arms’ – Chapter 2 of the book ‘Radical Peace: People Refusing War’ By William T. Hathaway (USA, Iraq)

June 6th, 2015

Comrades in Arms

Chapter 2 of the book
RADICAL PEACE: People Refusing War
By William T. Hathaway

RADICAL PEACE is a collection of reports from antiwar activists, the true stories of their efforts to change our warrior culture. This chapter was contributed by an ex-soldier.

Hi Mr. Hathaway,

I got your letter (forwarded) asking for information for your book. To answer your first question, Yes, I’m enjoying living in Holland. I’m becoming the little Dutch girl — the little Black Dutch girl, but that doesn’t bother people here. They’re very tolerant and internationally minded.

As for the rest of your questions, at first I didn’t think I could answer them. They reminded me too much of an essay test in school. Plus it’s not exactly pleasant to remember back on all this stuff, you know. I’m trying to leave it behind and start a new life.

But I kept thinking about it and finally decided I would forget the questions and just write about what happened. Like you said, people should know about this. Don’t give anybody my address, though. The army still wants to put me in prison.

Compared to a lot of people, I had it easy in Iraq — on a huge base with a Burger King, cold beer, video games, movies, air conditioned trailers, baseball games. About once a month we got mortared or rocketed and had to dive into the bunkers and maybe every other time somebody got killed, but there were thousands of us, so usually you didn’t know them even though you felt bad for them. June 6th, 2015

NEWS CENTER – Girê Spi Civil Society Forum stated that around 600 Kurdish civilians who fled Girê Spî due to an ISIS massacre threat and arrived at the border to northern Kurdistan have suffered a tear-gas attack by Turkish soldiers. According to a report by ANHA (Hawar News Agency), Girê Spî Civil Society Forum said in a statement on the subject that Rojava Kurds remained stuck at the border to Bakurê (North) Kurdistan amid attacks by ISIS gangs and Turkish soldiers.

The Civil Society Forum remarked that Turkish soldiers attacked the Kurdish civilians and did not allow them to move further in an attempt to keep them away from the border. The statement underlined that hundreds of people, including women and children, who were given 5-days of time by ISIS to leave their villages, remain stuck on the border with North Kurdistan where they were hindered by Turkish soldiers. ‘The Subcontraction Of Prison Violence’ by John Bowden (UK)

June 4th, 2015

From a comrade of ABC Brighton:

Ultimately prisons exist as instruments of state violence, and no matter how legitimized by statuary law their prime function and purpose is to inflict pain and suffering in the interests of social control. They are nothing more than blunt weapons of state power and ruling class authority and for those confined within them the experience of naked vulnerability and brutality is a constant every day reality.

Control within prisons themselves is maintained by a mixture and blend of officially sanctioned violence in the form of riot-squads, control units, segregation-units and “control and restraint teams” and the more unofficial forms of violence inherent in prison gangs and prisoner hierarchies, which ultimately are allowed to exist providing they serve the interests of the system in maintaining the overall prison status quo. Intrinsically prisons embody the iron law that ultimately power equals violence, especially in closed and total institutions like prisons where people, usually the most dispossessed and powerless, are held against their will.

In the UK prisons unofficial violence is an institutionalised and “normal” way whereby prisoners are controlled and terrorised into conforming and it is customary for those officially employed to maintain prison “good order and discipline” to recruit and manipulate prisoners into controlling their fellow captives by any means necessary, even occasionally murder. Comrades Juan Flores, Guillermo Duran and Nataly Casanova in more than 50 days of hunger strike ($hile)

June 3rd, 2015

(By Sin Banderas Ni Fronteras)

1. More than 50 days on hunger strike: solidarity inside and outside prisons.

Anarchist comrades Juan Flores, Guillermo Duran and Nataly Casanova
continues their hunger strike, started on April 14, demanding an end of the
harassment on their closest environment; end of aggression towards Juan
and Nataly; end the isolation of comrade Nataly Casanova; end of the
indiscriminate use of DNA testing; immediate release of comrade Enrique
Guzman.

The three comrades remain with integrity in position of confrontation
against power, and solidarious comrades have made polymorphic demonstrations
on the streets and outside prisons. Also, barricades and arson attacks have

Words from anarchist comrade Paul Jara “Pol”, arrested following “Operation Piñata” (Spain)

June 3rd, 2015

Greetings comrades and those in affinity. I’d like to send out some words as an anarchist, taking as good the many positions and visions that anarchism can adopt, all equally valid when they are seeking to destroy power, authority and the State.

I think that is the beauty of our ideas and in my opinion all these trajectories can coexist and merge in search of much longed for total liberation. I want to express my hatred, disgust and contempt for everything that concerns the State, power, authority and in particular that instrument of annihilation called prison, which uses isolation as its main weapon.

I have always maintained that anarchists must prepare themselves and be aware that at any moment the day can come when they will have to face prison and, in my opinion, this is logical, because if you try to destroy the State, it will try to arrest you in order to nullify you, paralyze and destroy you. Solidarity to arrested Grigoris Tsironis and Spiros Christodoulou and in active insurrectionary memory of Spiros Dravilas (Greece)

June 3rd, 2015

+ “For Spyros”, by the Conspiracy of Cells of Fire.

20 May 2015 – Greek police terror operation results in the arrest of two comrades and the execution of Spiros Dravilas:

Living a dignified path under the most adverse conditions

The police operation in Nea Aghialos on 20.5.2015 was crowned as a “success”. The TV cannibals stand over our friend’s dead body and scream: Grigoris Tsironis, Spiros Christodoulou and the deceased Spiros Dravilas are ruthless robbers and blood-thirsty murderers.

Grigoris was and remains a comrade. From his first arrests, a result of his participation in the Polytechnic occupation in 1995 and the struggles against the regeneration of Exarchia square in 1997, up to his participation in dozens of dynamic interventions of the anarchist movement and his active presence as a worker in the courier syndicate, Grigoris was always by our side. A fugitive as of January 2006 after the expropriation of a National Bank on Solonos street, he lived ten years of battle and survival against capitalism and its repressive mechanisms.

With a bounty on his head since 2009 for the same case and targeted all these years, he managed to maintain his humanity and militancy despite the adversities and the hunt set up against him by the modern persecution squad.

Spiros Christodoulou was and remains an unrepentant proletarian who carved and carves his own dignified path under the most adverse conditions: prison and illegality.

Just like Spiros Dravilas… He had tasted it from the age of 21 when he first came into contact with the harsh reality of incarceration. Read the rest of this entry »

Interview with an activist detained during Operation Fenix (Czech Republic)

June 3rd, 2015

From soliwebsite – antifenix:

Tomas Z. describes himself as an ecological activist from Olomouc region. His most “hardcore terrorist actions” include guerilla gardening (he planted couple of plants to other person’s land without their consent) and unconventional creation of cyclepath. On April 28th he was one of eleven people detained by Counter Organised Crime Unit of the Czech Police (UOOZ) during the undercover operation called Fenix. The police is convinced that 30 year old activist is one of the leaders of Network of Revolutionary Cells (SRB). According to police, SRB supposedly planned to attack trains transporting either military equipment or Hyundai cars with Molotov cocktails. Detention of Tomas Z. was justified with his alleged connection to destroyed police car in the city of Litvinov. Tomas Z. proclaimed this allegation to be nonsense and absurd as well as his connection with SRB. During incriminated period he was not living in the Czech Republic and police was most likely aware of that. Following interview will shed the light on practises of police which seem to be filled with fabricated pre-requisitions for the detention, at least in his case. These practises are commonly employed by police in “war against terror” around the world and now successfully practised in Czech national security services.

Can you disclose details regarding your detention?

Few officers in plain clothes detained me from the flat of my girlfriend but I think they had no rights to do so. I was handcuffed and taken to my house. All together there must have been more than 10 police personnel, because we departed in three fully occupied civilian cars. When arrived to my house there was three police vans full of police armoured with automatic weapons ready and waiting. I was taken to a rented land beside (rented by police for this occasion) and there I was shown the search warrant for my house and surrounding land. Police than started with the search, apparently looking for explosives, weapons and materials connected with anarchist movement. The special dog was used (trained for explosives search) and whole search took several hours but nothing has been found because I have never had anything like that in my possession.

‘Communization: The senile decay of anarchy (or re-inventing anarchy)’ – Fragment of the unpublished pamphlet “FAI Reloaded” by the Conspiracy of Cells of Fire : Imprisoned Members Cell (Greece)

June 1st, 2015

Inter Arma received and translated:

Communization: The senile decay of anarchy (or re-inventing anarchy) – fragment of the unpublished pamphlet “FAI Reloaded” by the Conspiracy of Cells of Fire.

i) Frozen Marxism

Today’s era smells like engine oil, cheap labor sweat and naphthalene of the morality of voluntary obedience… We do not want to be defined by the culture of techno-industrial fascism, the white uniforms of scientists, the neckties of technocrats, the eager silences of ordinary people, the stupid smiles of consumers… We do not match with the aesthetics of the glass world of flat television screens, the digital imitation of the life of social media, the display windows of lifestyle, the lens of security cameras. We do not fit in the society of captivity, the police checks of our identification papers, the supervision of security guards, the laws of the judges, the locked doors of prisons. We do not settle for the average normality dictated by morality, we don’t amuse our boredom with psychotropic drugs, we aren’t covered by the coldness of empty relations, we don’t read… Marx.

Today we live to the rhythm of a generalized crisis. Our daily life is throttled from the tyranny of numbers. Our life resembles an accounting book, whose calculations always find it deficient and indebted. They overwhelm us with financial terms and definitions, one half of which are unknown and the other half of no interest to us. The wandering charlatans of all ideologies, roam from one financial conference to the other and bombard us with ramblings and often incomprehensible interviews-speeches, each of them presenting his own social antidote to the economic crisis. On the shelves of the ideological supermarket every faithful consumer will find the antidote that suits him, in all shades. There are “revolutionary” antidotes, even “anarchist” ones. In Greece, the neo-communists, ex-anarchists, mix in the cauldron of ideologies anarchist labels, with plenty of frozen Marxism, anti-imperialism and a pinch of disguised national liberation. The new tension of “serious” anarchy dresses itself in a formal way and launches the trend of anti-capitalist struggle on a red background. The rhetoric of the neo-communists – “anarchists” talks about everything. In an effort to build a social marketing of propaganda for the masses, it promotes generalizations sanctifying the “oppressed people” and “workers” who, obviously, for them are “not accountable” for their responsibilities and silences, uses covertly socially palatable national references, such as “the Greek people”, “our country” and promises “social salvation” with the coming of post-revolutionary society, preaching in the assemblies of the need for centralized-structures… It seems that some neo-communists already rehearse their future offices. Perhaps, this what they train themselves for now, selling hegemony, experience coming from age and the wisdom of a leader within the anarchist milieu.

Internationale Aktionstage: Marco libero!

Wir rufen für die Tage vom 20. – 22. Read the rest of this entry »

Comrade Tamara Sol: Public Communique + Update on Transfer to High Security Prison ($hile)

May 31st, 2015

Tamara Sol Farís Vergara is Transferred to High Security Prison

This Wednesday, May 27th, 2015, Tamara Sol Farías Vergara was transferred to the ill-named “Centre for Feminine Orientation” (COF) located at Vicuña Mackenna and Capitan Prat streets in San Joaquin, Santiago.

The prison guard, Jenny Muñoz Gajardo, a Commandant who is in charge of the incarceration of over 500 women in the [prison] centre of extermination of “San Miguel,” is a loyal representative of police brutality and is paid millions of pesos to employ the logic of prison punishment and the control over people’s lives. This officer let her rage out with Tamara Sol and did not let her say goodbye to her cellmate, taking her out forcefully, without giving Sol the chance to pack her personal belongings (her prison mates gathered up what they could in a bag that Sol has yet to receive). We are told that Tamara Sol resisted with punches, screams and spits while being forced out by the prison guards, and was then handcuffed and taken to solitary confinement around 6pm. ‘Globalizing the Intifada’ By William T. Hathaway

May 31st, 2015

The invaders have surrounded and attacked us, conquered here and there, and built their bases in our lands. So we attack the invaders where we can, determined to retake our lands and drive them out. We would prefer not to be warriors. We would rather raise our children in the ways of kindness. But for our children to have a future, we must now be warriors. So be it.

In Palestine, Iraq and Afghanistan this war is most intense, but it is a international war, and people of every religion and race are under attack. The capitalist class is assaulting us worldwide, throttling our hopes of decent lives. We’re now all in the same boat, a global Mavi Marmara, so our resistance must be global. Our foe is not only the Zionists but the forces of Western imperialism of which they are a part. To survive, we must set aside our religious and political differences and form a united front. Shias, Sunnis, secularists and socialists need to work together to defeat our common enemy. If we join in solidarity, we can win. Otherwise the imperialists will continue to divide and rule.

Non-violent opposition is important but not sufficient. To be effective in this war, it must be coupled with armed struggle. Read the rest of this entry »

Lions of Rojava: New page for foreign volunteers in the fight against ISIS/Daesh (Kurdistan)

May 31st, 2015

New page for Lions of Rojava (the last one was shut down):

https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Lions-Of-Rojava/845769785510897

Also see:

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Volunteers-for-the-Lions-of-Rojava/740646939367672

Note: The YPG recruits volunteers through attraction to the cause and does not in any shape of form attempt to indoctrinate or “groom” people to travel to Rojava to join our cause. We are not like Daesh [ISIS]. The Lions of Rojava clearly explains to each individual the reality of the conflict in Rojava, the risks of travelling to the region and the expectations of the YPG. The safety of all volunteers is paramount. We always encourage the thousands of young westerners who have approached us to consider other ways to help the Kurdish and Ezidi people in the struggle against Daesh such as donating to charity or volunteering with humanitarian groups.
The YPG is not a militant militia, we are a Peoples Protection Unit that is organized under democratic, secular, gender equal and ecological principles that has formed in the absence of a functional government in Syria and the presence of a barbaric extremist Islamist threat. Our goal is to liberate all people from the tyranny and evil of Daesh and to construct a free and stable and democratic country.

About the slander by the Syrian Coalition – Statement of the General Command of the People’s Defense Units (Kurdistan)

May 31st, 2015

To the Media and Public Opinion – 30 May 2015

National Coalition of Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces are pursuing a speech disgraced the honor of the Syrian Revolution and derails it from its real track

Every victory for the People’s Defense Units (YPG) at the expense of the terrorist organization of Daesh (ISIS) in Syria, with the air support by the International Coalition Forces, Syrian Coalition emerges statements (most recently on 30 May 2015) of trumped-up charges and baseless slanders. Also to discredit the achievements of the YPG, and mislead public opinion from horrific massacres committed by ISIS against the Syrian people in all their diversity – all serve the terrorist organization of ISIS.

The irresponsible actions of the Syrian Coalition intentionally distort the facts to cover up defeats and ISIS terrorism, and try to blow into the fire to stimulate hatred among the Syrian people. Syrian Coalition is pursuing a speech disgraced the honor of the Syrian Revolution and derails it from its real track and their aim to spread the spirit of sectarianism, ethnic and sectarian strife in Syria which is multi-ethnic and doctrines, to serve foreign agendas who do not want good and peace for Syrian people. Communes In Rojava Growing Daily (Kurdistan)

May 29th, 2015

The emancipatory economic model which serves as the economic pillar in the Kurdish Popular Leader Abdullah Öcalan’s proposal around Democracy Autonomy and which aims at building a democratic, ecologically balanced society with egalitarian gender relations is coming to life every day in Rojava, according to an article in Özgür Gündem.

The Şehîd (‘Martyr’) Fadil Commune founded in the Cindirêsê district of the Efrîn Canton has replaced the logic of the capitalist market with that of a people’s market. The district market carries the distinction of being the first such market in the region and can meet the needs of residents in the region every Thursday. The market, which offers its service to the people on very low profit margins, reinvests of its income to the benefit of the local people. The market supplies such basic goods as fruits and vegetables, clothing and other textiles, as well as a myriad of other daily supplies. Speaking on the subject of expansion Ehmed Şea, a member of the Economic Committee of the Şehîd Fadil Commune, explained that “founded with the support of the district market’s service committee we occupy an area of 2,500 M2. As of now we have used 500 m2 for the people’s market. Because the central market was located for from our local population we decided to build a district market in our neighborhood. We want to develop further based on economic activities suitable to a communal model.”

‘Commando Emile Henry’ takes responsibility for an incendiary attack against the offices of Groupama Insurance and McQuilling Partners shipping company (Greece)

May 29th, 2015

(Athens, 22/05/2015)

Inter Arma received and translated:

“My hands don’t get used to the artificial connection in virtual universes. Connected lives in wireless networks, my eyes search for the eternal fire of rebellion among the multitude of corpses and only in isolated gazes, the conscious individual emerges with dagger eyes that resists dying in the democratic cemetery. Before going to sleep I embrace chaos as an idea that liberates my body and my mind Because after all, it makes me feel alive. I do not want to search for the grail that will liberate future societies. My fingers search for the bloody flight of the destruction of the chains of the rhythmic fire, of the close fire of power and its masters.”

Mauricio Morales Duarte

This day, six years ago, comrade Mauricio Morales was heading to the school for prison guards in Santiago, in distant Chile, when suddenly the bomb, which he intended to place there, exploded prematurely depriving him of his life. Six years later, today at dawn, we carried out a double arson attack as a minimum tribute to the memory of the comrade.

We mined a two-storey building on Vouliagmenis avenue in Elliniko, where the offices of the insurance company Groupama Insurance (a subsidiary of the multinational banking group with the same name) and the offices of the multinational shipping company McQuilling Partners are co-located, placing four improvised incendiary devices. With this action we do not anticipate an impact on or the understanding by neither the willingly obedient mass of peaceful citizens nor the irredentist “professionals” of the movement. Of course, the recognition and appropriation of anarchist violent action by young comrades is a positive perspective. However, we do not see this as a condition or constraint for going on the offensive. That would be hypocritical, because part of our mentality and orientation, beyond the theoretical constitution and practice, remains the constant satisfaction of our instincts and desires, something which is far from negligible. July 25: International Day of Solidarity with Antifascist Prisoners – Call from NYC Antifa (USA)

May 29th, 2015

From NYC ABC:

Our comrades in NYC Antifa are calling for an international day of
solidarity with antifa political prisoners. Below is their call for
endorsements.

On Saturday, July 25, 2015 antifascists will fight against those who— in
the government or in the streets, dream of imposing their fascist and
other Far Right nationalist nightmares on the rest of us. Throughout the
world, Islamophobic, anti-Semitic, anti-immigrant, and racist bigotries
are on the rise. Antifas are on the frontline in confronting these
reactionary politics, and we will not forget our comrades imprisoned in
the course of this struggle. The July 25 International Day of Solidarity
with Antifascist Prisoners originated in 2014 as a day of Solidarity
with Jock Palfreeman, an Australian who is imprisoned in Bulgaria for
defending two Romani men from an attack by fascist football hooligans.
Groups around the world took action: holding demonstrations, benefits
supporting the Bulgarian Prisoners Association, writing to Jock, and
talking about the plight of the Romani and Sinti people in general. In
2015 we would like to expand this day of solidarity to all antifascist
prisoners around the world. We encourage groups to take the day to plan
an event of their choice— whether it is a letter-writing, demonstration,
benefit, or other action, and to focus on the prisoners and related
issues that are of most importance to them locally. For now, this is a
call for endorsements by international groups, organizations,
collective, and formations; a formal announcement is forthcoming.
ENDORSEMENTS CAN BE SENT TO: nycantifascistaction@gmail.com

If there is an antifa prisoner you support, please e-mail us with his or
her details and the language(s) they can read.

No Pasaran!
