Anti-APECO Caravan in Aurora Province (Philippines)
APECO = Aurora Pacific Economic Zone and Free Port, a huge capitalist industrial development threatening the lives and environment of a large number of people, animals, fish and nature, whilst being promoted as an ‘ecological development’ by the insidious ‘green-wash’ public relations of professional advertising companies. This is a report 325 received from our correspondent there:
Last April 7 and 8 (2011), a huge crowd of approximately 500 people participate to support the two days Anti-APECO Caravan Rally. This people are came from different sector such as farmers, fisherfolks, students, womens sector, indigenous community and churches. They are all against the APECO development because of the unlawful, inhumane and destructive aspects of this governmental project that will affect the natural resources, livelihood and all the inhabitants that already live here.
This caravan also participated by different groups/NGO such BATARIS FORMATION CENTER, TASK FORCE SIERRA MADRE, DEFEND ECOLOGY NETWORK, MULTI-SECTOR ACTION GROUP, PIGLAS-KA, PAMANA AND SAKBIBI.
Early morning of April 7 in Bianoan Casiguran, Aurora people started to prepare. First, they start to make a small program in the church of Bgy.Bianoan then after that they went to the town proper of Casiguran to hand-out leaflets and make also a program. Almost 20 to 30 cars and trucks were available to transport this group throughout Baler, Aurora, so by 7pm they reached Mt.Carmel College in Baler. There was also an event here prepared by NGO’s and church entitled “AYOKO SA APECO”, some youth shared their talent to entertain and give some spirits to the exhausted campaigners.
Next morning April 8 another tour around Baler, Maria Aurora, San LUIS all parts of Aurora Province. Then after that they march to go inside the provincial capitol but unfortunately the authority anticipated the action and barricaded the entrance gate, so that no one can come inside. The Anti-APECO campaigners decided to hold their activity outside the provincial hall, they want to have a dialogue with Governor Angara but she hide and scared to talk to the people so her secretary said that she’s not available. So after that they proceed to their program, people from affected communities speak their statement against APECO and some support group also share their negative views against APECO.
The atmosphere in the rally are really overwhelming and the spirits are high, so they all decided not to stop the campaign against APECO and take it to the national level.
