About 50 people made a solidarity demo for Kobane at the Savoy Hotel from 6pm on Saturday 25 October. The Turkey Britain Chamber of Commerce and Industry were holding their annual ball, attended by the ambassador and deputy economy minister, and sponsored by global bank HSBC.
The demo was a good mix of London anarchists and antifascists alongside Kurdish youth, and other autonomous groups and individuals. There were no cops there initially, and the demonstrators took over the private road off the Strand that leads into the hotel, blocking all the main entrances with banners and making a lot of noise. Chants included “We are Kobane, Kobane is us”, “Alerta, Alerta, Antifascista”, “No Pasaran”, “Who supports ISIS, Turkey supports ISIS”, etc.
The demo didn’t shut the “ISIS business dinner” down, but gave a bit of a shake-up to the bourgeois ball-goers and seemed like a major embarassment to the Savoy hotel management. More importantly, it was a show of solidarity with the fighters in Rojava, and with the Kurdish and Turkish youth who have been going up against the guns of the Turkish state.
The police didn’t arrive for half an hour or more, then rocked up with five or so vans full. They managed to clear the private road and threatened the crowd with some kind of “public order” notices.
The ambassador and minister were not spotted, but presumably came in through a side entrance or otherwise, they were due to make speeches from 7.30PM. Guests had also been promised a chocolate fountain.

From El Enemigo Comun – by Simòn Sedillo / via anarchistnews
On December 11, 2012, the US Justice Department announced that banking giant HSBC was immune from prosecution despite overwhelming evidence that they consistently failed to implement controls against money-laundering. Assistant attorney general Lanny Breuer said: “Had the US authorities decided to press criminal charges, HSBC would almost certainly have lost its banking license in the US, the future of the institution would have been under threat and the entire banking system would have been destabilized.”
The entire banking system would have been destabilized?
The Department of Justice opted rather to charge HSBC a record-breaking 1.9 billion dollar fine, and ordered the bank’s activities monitored for five years. The 1.9 billion is equivalent to five weeks’ worth of HSBC earnings, in other words, a drop in the bucket. The saddest part of the story in the mainstream media, is the focus on money laundered and money fined, as opposed to lives lost and crime legitimized in one of the most grotesque admissions of complicity with organized crime in the so-called war on drugs. Basically what was announced to the world by the US Justice Department was that the money ran too thick, and the criminals were too powerful. The global economic impact of prosecuting a bank where the dirty money has been going, was too dangerous to risk. “Sorry kids, but we guess the bad guys win.” (more…)

17 June 2011
“Early Friday morning, 17 June, we brought disorder to Chesterton Road, Cambridge. The HSBC bank was graffitied, its locks glued, its cashpoint trashed using glue and spraypaint. The offices of Seetech, a ‘back to work’ training company, was graffitied with the words FUCK WORK and circled As, a bike lock was used to chain the front doors and the locks were glued. We then visited the Chesterton Road JobCentre and graffitied the front saying FUCK WORK B4 IT FUCKS U and so on. We then sabotaged the cashpoints of the Lloyds TSB and the Barclays banks nearby, also graffiting both offices and gluing locks. A few other nearby businesses had their locks glued and were graffitied, including the slogan SMASH AUTHORITY, FUCK THE POLICE.
This goes out to other marginalised people, those who cannot and/or will not integrate into this sick society.
International solidarity to imprisoned fighters, including American eco-anarchist prisoners Marie Mason and Eric McDavid, also not forgetting another long term caged freedom lover Ted Kaczynski (aka FC or ‘Unabomber’).
We will not forget or give in, subversive complicities are our strength! Until all cages are destroyed…”
