Generations of Resistance to War

Chapter 8 the book
RADICAL PEACE: People Refusing War
By William T. Hathaway

A Granny for Peace told of finding young allies in the struggle against military recruiting. Due to the PATRIOT Act, she wishes to remain nameless.

It’s never easy being a parent or a child. The generations always have friction between them, a conflict between the elders’ need to give guidance and youths’ need to find their own way. I grew up in the 1950s, when the USA was very conservative and bound by traditions. My parents’ generation had grown up in the Depression amid poverty and then struggled through World War Two with its threat of death and destruction. By the time they were ready to start families, they were fixated on stability and security. They measured their progress by their possessions: buying their first car, first television, first house. Their morality centered on controlling sexuality and protecting private property. Their religion was a death cult of stern patriarchs, obedient virgins, innocent babies, and threats of eternal torture. Their deepest philosophy was, “There is no free lunch.” The peak of their scientific achievement was the hydrogen bomb. Fear was their strongest emotion. (more…)

Report from ABC Denver: Repression in Denver (USA)

Thursday, August 13th, 2015

Over the last year there has been a strong resistance to police murder
and terror across the city of Denver. This is only the most recent surge
in resistance to police terror in our city, going back to the loss of
Paul Childs in 2003 or more recently Marvin Booker in 2010.

Denver Police have been systematically targeting and arresting those
actively involved in this organizing. Denver Community Defense
Committee, a group which has organized extensive support for families of
people murdered by police, has five of its seven members under
prosecution or known to be under investigation by the Gang Unit of DPD.
Prominent independent journalists, those with an expansive reach through
social media, have been targeted and arrested while filming the police
in Denver.

Washington DC: Solidarity Action at Greek Embassy (USA)

Thursday, August 13th, 2015

Received August 10 2015:

STATEMENT:

Hundreds of our brothers and sisters in Greece are currently imprisoned.
The reasons why range from dissenting against the oppressive regimes, to
simply being a relative of a targeted anarchist. We speak out not only for
their unequivocal release, but also for the dismantling of the state
structure which oppresses all people, everywhere. As anarchists in the
occupied territory known as the United States of America, we know that
electoral politics will never represent the dreams of the people. The
decisions of Syriza have made this abundantly clear. Those in power will
never protect the people. We support not the firing of prison wardens, but
of setting fire to the prisons themselves. We do not support the stairs
being swept clean from the top to bottom, but for there to be no stairs.
The struggle in Greece is real. It is a struggle that needs to spread
across the planet. Our action tonight is a small show of solidarity to our
comrades. We hope to awaken our brothers and sisters as you have awoken
yours. The only solution is revolution.

'From Cheerleader to Enemy of the State' – Chapter 7 of the book 'Radical Peace: People Refusing War' By William T. Hathaway (USA)

From Cheerleader to Enemy of the State

Chapter 7 of the book
RADICAL PEACE: People Refusing War
By William T. Hathaway

The long, flouncy curls from Judy Davis’s cheerleader days are gone. Her straight blonde hair is now cut short. Large blue eyes stand out in a face pale without makeup. Her soft Southern drawl has an undertone of determination. “It’s taken me awhile, but now I’m glad to be considered an ‘unsuitable influence.’ That was how the school board justified my firing. That and ‘deviating from the curriculum.’ It’s like they were implying I was a deviant. And according to their norms, I am.”

The twenty-nine-year-old was fired for teaching her high school students how US foreign policy has provoked terrorism. This struggle with her school board turned her from a Republican into a revolutionary for peace.

“I taught my tenth grade American history class about what the USA has done for decades in the countries in which we now have terrorism. We work with the local oligarchs there to keep the country under control for our economic advantage. We support dictators and also the kind of managed democracy we have in the USA, where the only political parties that have a chance are those aligned with business and the private ownership of resources. People in those countries are tired of being kept at the bottom. They’re tired of CIA coups and assassinations of progressive leaders. So now they’re defending themselves the only way they can. And they’re getting pretty good at it. (more…)

'Exit Free' – Chapter 6 of the book 'Radical Peace: People Refusing War' By William T. Hathaway (USA)

Exit Free

Chapter 6 of the book
RADICAL PEACE: People Refusing War
By William T. Hathaway

The following report was contributed by one of the founders of Exit Free, a collective in the USA that helps women leave the military by discharge or desertion.

I’ve become a criminal for peace. How I got there is a complicated story, beginning when the community college where I teach reduced most of its humanities faculty to adjunct status. It saved them a bundle on salaries. We now teach a maximum of three courses per semester, for a really miserable hourly wage with no benefits. They brought in other part-timers to fill the gaps. So the faculty are now mostly freelancers. I ended up with a lot less money but a lot more time.

Several other women I knew were also broke — laid off or dropped out of the McJob economy. We decided to share the misery and formed a collective to make ends meet. One of us had a big empty-nester house from her divorce settlement, so we all moved in. We buy food in bulk, share two cars, planted a big garden, help each other with the things each of us is good at, sometimes quarrel and cry, but mostly we like being together. We feel stronger now than before when it was each of us alone against the neo-con world. (more…)

Smash the KKK, Columbia SC (USA)

Monday, July 6th, 2015

On Saturday, July 18th, the Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan will assemble on the statehouse grounds in Columbia, SC. And we will confront them.

This rally is part of a recent wave of anti-Black terror, from the Charleston massacre to the arson of Black churches, that has strategically sought to build upon a white racist backlash against the #BlackLivesMatter, anti-police uprisings of the past year.

We call upon all those willing and able—#BlackLivesMatter activists, community organizers, anti-racists, anarchists and other radicals, and anyone else furious with racism and the police—to converge on Columbia, confront the Klan, and defy their message of white supremacy. History has shown—from the armed standoff against a lynch mob in Columbia, TN in 1946 to the 1958 Battle of Hayes Pond, from the Deacons for Defense to the armed defiance of Monroe, NC’s NAACP chapter, from the 1979 Greensboro Massacre to the 1997 confrontation with the Klan in downtown Asheville, NC—that we must oppose white supremacist organizing actively and physically, in our streets and neighborhoods.

The KKK is only a small group, whose ability to inflict racist violence actually pales in comparison to that of structures like the police, the economy, and the state. But the sentiment that groups like the KKK hold runs deep through the currents of whiteness in this country, and is a major obstacle to our struggles against these larger structures. Explicit manifestations of white supremacy like the Klan are one way that the state will seek to contain the #BlackLivesMatter organizing and anti-police riots of the last year; at this historic juncture, a large Klan rally in the South cannot go unchallenged.

Bring banners, bring a friend, and bring your anger and rage against the white supremacy that courses through the veins of this society. See you in Columbia.

Columbus, Ohio: Antifa arson communique for Rote Flora solidarity – 2013 (USA)

Saturday, June 27th, 2015

325 receives and transmits:

“this is just to say that back on the [winter] solstice of 2013, i lit a newspaper stand on fire in solidarity with the rota flora squat being attacked by the fascist pig-state. i approached by bicycle and used a lighter to start the fire right at the front corner of the front lawn of the ohio state house (broad and high) in columbusx ohio united disney states of north american continent landia. i made sure to leave the lighter in the flaming shit-newspapers so it would make a minor explosion of the rage i felt as i rode furiously away on my bicycle. i did get caught and fought with everything to show those fucks a terrible time. it ended with 2 days in jail after a forced tranquilization shot in the ass surrounded by neo-nazi pigs (about 6 white officers) in the back of a paddywagon. i woke up in jail with a huge black eye but after kick-ass legal defense, i served a year non-reporting-probation for ‘criminal mischief’. i am pleased to see this link http://rt.com/news/hamburg-rote-flora-clashes-635/ at what happened the day i was released! solidaridad in full-hearted rage and love for free safe spaces – when they bring shields we show them fire; when they bring riot-cops, we bring the r][I][ot!”

'Comparing Evils' – Chapter 4 of the book 'Radical Peace: People Refusing War' By William T. Hathaway (USA, Germany, Afghanistan)

Comparing Evils

Chapter 4 of the book
RADICAL PEACE: People Refusing War
By William T. Hathaway

Jamal Khan is an Afghan journalist who fled his country because of Taliban persecution and now lives in Germany. We met in the apartment of a mutual friend from the Deutsche Friedensgesellschaft, the German Peace Society. Jamal is mid-forties, thin, with curly brown hair, tan skin, and clear green eyes that take everything in.

Hathaway: “Do you miss your country?”

Khan: “Only when I’m drunk, which isn’t very often. Then I get stupidly sentimental.

“Actually I’m not a big fan of any country. They’re all inhuman. They exist mainly as platforms for power. The rulers promote cultural rituals that make people identify with the place they live. Then they manipulate the people’s patriotic emotions to get them to fight wars for them. We cling to the identification because it gives us a sense of security, of belonging to something greater. But the insecurity we feel is actually generated by the power the rulers have over us.

'SAMs for Uncle Sam' – Chapter 3 of the book ‘Radical Peace: People Refusing War’ By William T. Hathaway (USA, Germany, Iraq)

SAMs for Uncle Sam

Chapter 3 of the book
RADICAL PEACE: People Refusing War
By William T. Hathaway

Merna al-Marjan is a young Iraqi who is currently in Germany studying European history. We talked in her dormitory room, a spartan but functional cubicle in a building that embodies a hopeful change in European history: it was constructed in the nineteenth century as an army barracks but now houses university students. That’s progress.

On Merna’s small table sat a pot of peppermint tea and a plate of baklava. She’s short and plump with smooth skin the color of clover honey and deep anthracite eyes; she was wearing a long skirt of light cotton, a long-sleeved blouse, and a green paisley headscarf.

Hathaway: “Headscarves have become a controversial item of clothing here in Germany.”

Al-Marjan: “Yes, you can’t teach in the schools if you wear one. It’s OK for a teacher to wear a Christian crucifix but not a Muslim headscarf. I didn’t wear a hijab in Iraq, but I’ve started doing it here to show solidarity. It’s ridiculous to ban an article of clothing, a simple piece of cloth. What sort of freedom is that?

'A New Hope' by Voltairine de Cleyre

The New Hope by V. de Cleyre (March 15th, 1893)

I stand in the darkness waiting
For the light of the truth to shine;
The faith that you preach has failed me,
And your God is no longer mine.

I have lifted my hands to heaven,
And besought him, with many a prayer,
To put down the evil doer
And destroy the unrighteous snare.
